No. 317, March/April 2024
Our cover story this issue focuses on cellist Tina Guo’s longtime musical partnership with film composer Hans Zimmer. Her work includes the Oscar-winning soundtrack to Dune (and its upcoming sequel, Dune: Part Two), Sherlock Holmes, Wonder Woman, Inception, Iron Man 2, and Clash of the Titans, among many others. Her extensive credits in the film and video game worlds are perhaps surprising, given Guo’s classical upbringing, but she relishes the freedom she finds in her wide-ranging career. “People used to tell me that I should ‘stick with one genre,’” says Guo, “but this is the perfect playground for me to release all of my creative energy.” Elsewhere in this issue, you’ll also find a special section detailing the many delights for string players in four musical cities: Vienna, Seattle, Austin, and Washington, DC.
